Many high schools are getting the message about student stress and are looking for ways to lighten the homework load. The so-called “no homework” movement is focused on elementary grades, but framing the choice as “no homework vs. homework” is misguided, according to Maurice Elias of Rutgers University and co-author of Emotionally Intelligent Parenting and The Joys and Oys of Parenting.

The School Board recognizes the importance of assigning meaningful and quality homework to students. Research indicates that schools in which homework is routinely assigned and assessed tend to have higher achieving students. Homework fosters student achievement, independence, and responsibility and serves as a vital link between school and home.
Elementary School Homework Probably Isn’t Good For Kids.. “Trend-wise, what’s happening across the country, is that we’ve started to see an increase in elementary schools eliminating homework, or saying that homework is just to read or be read to,” she says.
